Online storage

Supported clients: Whiteboxes, Routers

The online storage test supports measuring download speed from several popular online file storage services.

The methodology for each service varies slightly, as each uses a different series of steps to redirect users to the appropriate location that hosts the actual content. For each service, a randomly generated 1GB file is stored publicly on the online storage platform. The input to the online storage test client is the URL of this publicly accessible file. The client will follow HTTP redirects and will honour HTTP cookies issued to it.

Once the final URL of the real content is obtained, the client will begin the measurement phase (time spent handling redirects is not included in the measurement). The client will download data as fast as possible over a single TCP connection for the duration specified (10 seconds by default).

Traffic from most online storage services is encrypted on-the-wire using TLS. The online storage test client does not decrypt the final content, in order to avoid saturating the CPU on high-bandwidth connections and underestimating the available throughput.

The online storage test is compatible with the following providers:

  1. Google Drive
  2. Amazon Drive
  3. Sharepoint
  4. Microsoft OneDrive
  5. Dropbox
